Lake Garda is rich in historic sites. Most of them date back to
prehistoric times, the Roman Empire, the late Middle Ages, or, especially, to the
Risorgimento, i.e. the period which led to Italy's declaration of independence and during which many battles were fought in the Lake's hinterland. There are also various
museums of local trades and traditions, including a few devoted to fishery, olive oil, and wine.
Finally, many villas and castles bear a silent testimony to the history and culture of the lakeside populations.
