Lake Garda (also known as ‘Benaco’) is Italy's largest lake. It lies at an altitude of 65 m above sea level. Its maximum length (measured between Riva del Garda and Peschiera) is 51.6 km (32 miles) and its maximum width 17.2 km (10.7 miles). It has a surface area of 369,95 km2 (142.8 sqm); the maximum depth (between Muslone and Castelletto di Brenzone) is 346 m, the average depth 135 m.

Lake Garda is definitely the most interesting of all the Alpine lakes in terms of plant diversity and microclimate. Its shape is also quite distinctive: the narrower fjord-like northern part is hedged in by high mountain ranges whereas the broad expanse of the southern part opens onto a plain. Thanks to this orographic environment, which includes mountains that are over 2000 metres high (the Monte Baldo range), it is possible to practise a wide range of water, ground, and sky sports.

Typical winds of Lake Garda: the Sover or Suer (called 'Bali' in Riva del Garda) blows from Bocca di Riva towards S. Vigilio. The Ander blows from west to east and brings nice weather if it starts in the afternoon and ends after sunset. The Avreser (Balestro) blows from any direction and brings many scattered clouds and unsettled weather.

Evening winds are called Montesè, i.e. ‘mountain winds’. The Ora is a regular westerly wind that is useful for navigation.

The Rèfol is a sudden short-lasting spring wind. The Gardesana or Grancher blows in winter from the province of Mantua; it brings either fog or unsettled weather. The Bovaren blows from the Vobarno gorge (over Salò) and brings cold weather.
